where
u = ? this is the initial velocity you are trying to find
v = 0 when the car comes to a rest
a = -10m/s²
d = 60m
now d0 is the distance the car travels during
the reaction time t = 0.85s
you get
d0 = ut
substitute this and v = 0 in (*) gives
0 = u² + 2a(d - ut)
rearrange
u² - 2atu + 2ad = 0
which is a quadratic, the quadratic formula
