Ken asks…how do you distinguish between aqueous potassium bromide and potassium iodide?i want to know the test used,result with bromide and the result with iodideNancy answers:The best method is the silver nitrate test for chloride, bromide and iodide ions.

The test will give:

A white precipitate of silver chloride with chloride ions

Silver nitrate + sodium chloride → silver chloride + sodium nitrate
AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq)
